ILLUSION

My husband and I are fortunate to work out of our studio home.  I occupy 80% of the space because, well, artists need room for stuff.  Frank occupies a computer in a small room off the garage.

When I feel I’ve finished a painting I text, “It’s 5 o’clock somewhere.”  That’s code for Frank to select our music and pour a Happy Hour beverage, while I prop and prep the painting for final review.

My husband’s a sailor, and this week I painted a bird in flight that captured his sense of aerodynamic propulsion.  He explained in great detail how the angle of the wings and tail feathers controlled flight dynamics similar to the sails and rudder of a boat.  When he excitedly pointed out that the angle of the tail forced a downward propulsion I replied…"Honey, that’s its left wing.”  He looked utterly stunned, took a sip and said, “Well, I guess beauty IS in the eye of the beholder.”

When I shared the painting with my art group and got similar diversity of opinion, my mentor smiled and whispered, “Omitting detail allows the heart to fill in the space.”
